Being the only vegan in a large meat-eating family isn’t easy. We all have similar taste in cuisine, like Mexican, tapas, and mediterranean, but some nights at home require two separate meals to be made. Luckily, my mom eats an almost entirely vegan diet, so I’m not left in the dark to fend for myself.
Eating out is what causes the bigger problem. I’m usually not a fan of sports bars or steak houses, but the men in my family definitely do not take a liking to organic, vegetarian restaurants.
That’s why I love Beans and Barley, a local restaurant in Milwaukee that is perfect for vegans and non-vegans to dine together. It’s not entirely vegetarian, yet there are enough options that everyone can find something and be satisfied.
My entire family hasn’t come here yet, but when we do, it won’t be another frustrating attempt to go out to eat as a family! This time it was just the momma and me.
We shared an order of the Tofu Fajitas, which was grilled tofu, green and red peppers, with black beans and guacamole on the side, and we both ordered the Mesclun Salad with Grilled Vegetables and Balsamic Tofu.
This meal, followed by Moneyball on Movies On Demand, equals the perfect Friday night. [SUCH a great movie.]
